Ho Ho Ho Hybrid Day!

December 3rd, 2008

Hey everyone!  LuAnn here with a quick and easy Hybrid project for you!  And I apologize for the photos - they aren’t the best.  My camera was being difficult!!  Today we’re making Grinch Dust toppers!   Here’s what you’ll need:

  • ziplock sandwich/snack baggie
  • cardstock
  • stapler
  • sugar
  • green food coloring (I actually used green and a few drops of Neon green for that Grinchy color!)
  • your favorite digital scrap supplies

First, I measured my baggie to see what sized topper I would need.  I decided to go with a 7″ width x 6″ length sized topper.    I created the lower half of my topper first which was the “Grinch Dust” part and then merged those layers visible.

Next, I rotated my whole canvas 180 degrees so that I could work on what would be the back of the topper.   After adding my verse and sentiment from Santa, I merged all the layers visible and saved as a jpeg.

Print and cut.  Fold in half, matching edges.

Put some sugar in a bowl.  Add a few drops of green food coloring and mash in with a fork making sure you get all the lumps of coloring mixed with the sugar.  I then added the Neon green drops to give it a Grinchy color.  I then allowed this to sit, uncovered, for about an hour just to let it “dry”.

Fill your ziplock baggie.  Position the baggie in between your topper and staple in place.  *I cheated a little by eyeing it up and then putting 2 glue dots inside the topper to hold the baggie in place while I stapled it together*

And here’s my Grinch dust - ready to give!

And the back which reads:

Don’t let the Grinch steal your Christmas. You must be on your guard.
Before retiring on Christmas Eve, sprinkle this dust out on your yard.
The Grinch will see your magic dust and know you’ve taken great care,
To protect your home and family and keep Christmas joy in the air.

Miscellany Monday - Scrapping is for EVERYONE!

December 1st, 2008

I frequently give presentations on digital scrapping to church groups and ladies groups.  The ages range from 15 to 70!  This is such a wide variety, and I love that fact about scrapbooking!  I firmly believe that everyone has a story to tell.  No matter what your age, you can scrap your life!

So many times, when I look through a gallery, most of the layouts are about children.  While this is fantastic (of course!), what about scrappers that don’t have children right now?  Or scrappers who have grown up children and don’t send pictures of themselves? (oops, sorry Mom!)  There are SO MANY things to scrap about other than children!  Your significant other, your pets, your daily routines, your likes and dislikes, your home, your friends, social events, and the list goes on and on and on.

My challenge to you for this week…Scrap something OTHER than children!  This is a great time of year to focus on special items or traditions in your life.  I went through the Penny’s Miscellany Gallery and chose some layouts from the Maniacs to spotlight today.  I hope you find lots of inspiration to document more facets of your life!!

It’s Hybrid Hump Day!!

November 26th, 2008

Happy Hybrid day!  Can you believe that there are only 29 days until Christmas?  How’s your
Christmas shopping coming?  I’ve been making some smaller crafty/hybrid gifts for my extended family but haven’t even started on the kids.  I need to upload my calendars to be printed that I made using Penny’s 5×7 2009 Calendars:

So, a week or so ago, while I was stalking some stamping sites for inspiration, I came across some really cute Christmas countdown calendar - you know the kind that help kids (and scare the adults LOL) with how many days until Christmas.   I decided to make my own countdown calendar.

Now, I’d post my inspiration for this project but it really makes mine look BAD!  LOL  don’t get me wrong - I think it turned out fairly cute and my daughter just loves it.   She already has it on her dresser so she can do the countdown!!   She still believes in Santa at 11 years old!   I’m hoping to get some punches (scallop circle punch, inner circle punch, a few rectangle scallop punches and a square punch for Christmas) - either that or a Cricut!!!

I made my countdown calendar using two 4″ chipboard coasters which are held together with some wire binding that I removed from a used up small notebook.  I used my scissors to cut off any excess.  So no throwing out filled up notebooks anymore!  Save that binding!!!

I chose my background paper from Penny’s upcoming release Holly Days and printed a 4 inch square on sticker paper.   I used a craft knife to trim the excess and round the corners.   To do the binding, I simply used the note book cover as a pattern for the holes.   I laid the cover on the coasters, marked the holes and punched them using my Crop-o-dile.  Easy peasy and perfectly spaced!

I created my number tags using the tag from Holly Days and the green alphabet in the kit.  (There’s a red alphabet in the kit too!) I did have to trim the tags down once they were printed and cut so that they fit nicely on the calendar.

The cloud looking piece that says “days until Christmas” is a chipboard element I bought in a can of 1000 elements - they were kind of ugly elements but I always look at things and think “what can I do to make that usable?”  LOL   I just used the back which was white to write on!  It’s attached using Pop-dots.

Santa is one of the elements in Holly Days also - isn’t he cute?  I just had to use Santa because this countdown is specifically for kids!  I wanted to use the reindeer in the kit too but he wasn’t fitting on the small calendar.  He’s attached on Pop-dots to give it some dimension.

And that’s it!  I created this little project in an evening.  If I make another, I’ll probably change some things a bit - maybe use some pre-made tags, maybe use a white pom-pon on the end of Santa’s hat.   maybe some glitter LOL.

So, what have you made lately?  Let’s see it!  I know I can always use the inspiration!!!
